Brain Structures in Sleep and Dreaming

The brain contains a variety of structures involved in waking, sleeping and dreaming. Some of these are:

  • The basal forebrain
  • The lateral geniculate organ
  • The occipital cortex
  • The optic chiasma
  • The pineal gland
  • The pons
  • The reticular formation
  • The supra-chiasmatic nucleus

What you need to do...

First, download and print off this handout. Then, use your mouse pointer to find the brain structures listed above. As you find each one, label it on your handout, by drawing a line. Under each label, briefly note the main function of each brain structure you identify.
