---------------------- www.psychlotron.org.uk ---------------------- Name of resource: defying authority/disobedience article/activity Submitted by: Aidan Sammons Specification details: AQA-B Other specifications: AQA-A Guidance: source for a reciprocal teaching activity (based on a Geoff Petty idea). Form students into groups of four or fewer. Everyone gets a copy of the reading ‘disobedience: resisting authority’. Explain how the activity will work: in each group a ‘teacher’ is nominated. Everyone reads a paragraph silently, then the ‘teacher’ asks a question to elicit the main idea of the paragraph. The group then discusses and agrees an answer to the question. They must then check with teacher (you) who will assess whether the Q and A really do get at the gist of the paragraph. ‘Teacher’ then provides a short summary of the main idea of the paragraph. ‘Teacher’ asks group for points that need clarifying and may ask other members of the group to clarify for her. They must check again with teacher (you) that the summary is suitable; help clarify if not. A new teacher is chosen (go round group) and the process begins again for the next paragraph. NB: model the first paragraph yourself i.e. get whole class to read silently, then you go through the process of thinking up a question (think aloud) get whole class to agree an answer and then summarise. If a group finishes, ask them for a summary of the whole text.
